Who Started California’s Deadliest Wildfire — and Why?
Federal authorities have charged 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht with starting the Palisades Fire, one of California’s most devastating wildfires in history.
Prosecutors allege that Rinderknecht ignited a small blaze on New Year’s Day that smoldered underground for nearly a week before erupting into an inferno across Pacific Palisades and Malibu, killing 12 people and destroying more than 17,000 structures.
The suspect, an Uber driver, reportedly returned to the scene to film the fire and later called 911, possibly to create an alibi.
Investigators discovered a lighter in his car matching one found in his apartment, linking him to the crime.
The Los Angeles Fire Department’s internal report revealed serious failures in communication, delayed evacuations, and insufficient preparation despite warnings of severe winds.
