Wildfires in South Korea Leave 4 Dead and Force Mass Evacuations
At least four people, including three firefighters and a public servant, have died in a series of wildfires sweeping across southeastern South Korea.
According to the Korea Forest Service, over 9,000 personnel and 105 helicopters have been deployed to combat the fast-moving fires, fueled by dry and windy conditions. The blazes have destroyed more than 6,300 hectares (16,000 acres) of forest, damaging homes and a temple.
More than 1,500 residents have been evacuated from affected areas as firefighting efforts continue. Acting President Choi Sang-mok led a disaster response meeting and vowed to mobilize all available resources while urging authorities to prioritize the safety of emergency crews.
