Why Prince Andrew Gave Up His Royal Titles

Once known as Queen Elizabeth II’s “favorite son,” Prince Andrew has officially given up the title of Duke of York, marking another chapter in his public downfall.

The decision came just days before the posthumous release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who had accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein.

Though Andrew denied the allegations, he reached an out-of-court settlement in 2022 reportedly worth $16 million, sparking criticism across the United Kingdom.

Following that case, the 65-year-old prince was stripped of his military honors, royal patronages, and the “His Royal Highness” title, effectively ending his public duties. His remaining titles, including Duke of York, will now remain dormant.

Andrew continues to reside at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, leading a largely private life while still retaining his status as a member of the royal family by birth. The decision reflects the monarchy’s ongoing effort to distance itself from scandals tied to Epstein.
