Why California Just Banned Loud TV Ads
California has officially outlawed loud television and streaming commercials, marking a major win for viewers tired of sudden volume spikes interrupting their favorite shows.
The new law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, expands existing federal and state broadcast regulations to include digital and streaming platforms such as Hulu, Peacock, and YouTube TV — industries that were previously unregulated in this regard.
For years, Californians have complained that commercials often blast at higher decibel levels than the programs themselves, forcing people to reach for the remote in frustration.
The legislation now requires advertisers to ensure their ads remain at a consistent volume with the content they accompany, eliminating the jarring audio jumps that became synonymous with TV watching.
