When the Sky Breaks Open: What Are Cloudbursts?
Cloudbursts, often called “rain bombs,” are sudden, intense downpours where several inches of rain fall within an hour, usually in mountainous regions. In India and Pakistan, recent cloudbursts have caused massive destruction, killing hundreds and sweeping away entire villages. Experts warn these extreme events are becoming more frequent and more powerful due to climate change, as warmer air holds more moisture. With little warning time and fragile infrastructure, communities remain highly vulnerable.
