What Is Öcalan’s New Message on the PKK, Kurdish Unity, and Peace?
Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), has sent three major political messages from his prison cell in Turkey, despite being in solitary confinement on Imrali Island since 1999.
Öcalan remains a central figure in Kurdish politics, and his messages have reached senior Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) leaders in northern Syria, as well as members of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in Turkey.
In these messages, Öcalan is advocating for a shift in the PKK’s political strategy, emphasizing peace as a strategic goal. He is also seeking European support to strengthen the Kurdish role in regional politics and calling for greater Kurdish unity across different territories.
These statements come shortly after an Imrali delegation visited the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and met with President Masoud Barzani. During the meeting, Barzani reaffirmed his full support for the peace process in Turkey, describing it as the only viable path toward lasting solutions.
