US Senate Rejects Bids to Block Arms Sales to Israel Over Gaza
The U.S. Senate has voted down Senator Bernie Sanders’ resolutions to block the sale of $675 million in bombs and 20,000 automatic rifles to Israel.
While the measure failed, the vote revealed a significant shift in Democratic sentiment, with 24 Democrats opposing the bomb deal and 27 opposing the rifle shipment, more than in any of Sanders’ past attempts.
The growing opposition comes as images of starvation and suffering emerge from Gaza, where a humanitarian crisis continues to deepen nearly two years into the war. Several Democratic senators delivered emotional floor speeches criticizing Israel’s military strategy and urging the Trump administration to dramatically expand aid efforts.
Although Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer voted against the resolution, others, such as Senators Patty Murray and Dick Durbin, publicly broke with tradition, signaling mounting discomfort within the party.
Republicans, meanwhile, remained unified in supporting the arms sales, blaming Hamas for the crisis in Gaza. The vote highlights intensifying pressure on U.S. foreign policy as Gaza approaches famine conditions.
