U.S. Frustration Grows Over Lebanon’s Failure To Meet Ceasefire Commitments

David Schenker warns that frustration is rising sharply in Washington as Lebanon fails to carry out key commitments made under the ceasefire agreement. Despite pledges by Lebanon’s president and prime minister to enforce sovereignty and implement U.N. Resolutions 1701 and 1559, Schenker says the government is “not doing either one,” particularly regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah in southern and northern Lebanon. He notes limited progress in the south but says the burden is increasingly falling on Israel, while contradictory statements from the Lebanese Armed Forces signal deeper instability. Schenker describes the situation as “the canary in the coal mine,” raising concerns about where this trajectory may lead.
