U.S. Engagement and Concerns in Sudan

Former USAID official Adolfo Franco says the United States has long been engaged in Sudan, citing both humanitarian and security interests that span decades.

Franco notes the region’s history of famine, ethnic violence, and instability, and says it has also been a gathering point for extremist groups.

He expresses concern over reports of regional actors supporting violence against Christian minorities, emphasizing that the U.S. will likely remain focused on mediation efforts through Arab allies rather than direct intervention.
