Trump Warns of NYC Funding Freeze if Mamdani ‘Doesn’t Behave’
US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut off federal funding to New York City if Democratic primary winner Zohran Mamdani becomes mayor and “doesn’t behave.”
Mamdani, a democratic socialist and state assemblyman, defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in a major upset, promising rent control, free childcare, and sanctuary city protections.
Trump labeled Mamdani a “pure communist” and “radical lunatic,” warning of consequences under his administration.
Mamdani hit back, saying Trump wants to distract from working-class issues. The showdown sets the stage for a heated three-way mayoral race in November between Mamdani, current mayor Eric Adams, and a possible independent Cuomo run.
