Spokesperson for U.S. Department of State: Trump’s “America First” Shapes U.S. Global Role

Michael Mitchell, the Regional Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, explained how President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy shapes both domestic and foreign affairs.

He emphasized that the central focus of the administration is improving life for American citizens, with illegal immigration and trade agreements topping the list of priorities.

Mitchell clarified that prioritizing U.S. interests does not mean ignoring foreign policy or abandoning multilateral cooperation.

Instead, he argued that the U.S. government engages with international partners when policies align but is prepared to act independently when they diverge.

He also addressed criticism of Trump’s stance toward the United Nations. While acknowledging the President’s sharp critique of multilateralism and bureaucracy, Mitchell stressed that the U.S. does not seek to abolish the UN.

Rather, Trump’s message was about reform—reducing inefficiencies and avoiding what he called “administrative paralysis” that hinders economic growth and global progress.

According to Mitchell, the administration remains committed to cooperation when beneficial but will always return to its guiding principle: America’s interests first.
