Sen. Tim Kaine: Monitor Syria Sanctions & Minority Rights
Democratic Senator Tim Kaine is raising concerns about Syria’s future as the U.S. considers easing sanctions. Kaine supports temporary sanctions relief but emphasizes the need for oversight to ensure that all Syrians—particularly minority groups such as the Druze and Kurds—are treated equally.
Kaine describes Syria as entering a “new chapter” following years of conflict, one that could offer opportunity if handled responsibly. However, he cautions that without accountability, minority communities risk being sidelined or mistreated. He points to bipartisan support for President Trump’s decision to release some sanctions on Syria, but stresses that relief should be time-limited—such as 180 days—so the U.S. can reassess whether the Syrian government is honoring its obligations.
