The Only Library Split by a Border Is Now at Risk

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House is a unique landmark built directly on the U.S.–Canada border, connecting the towns of Derby Line, Vermont, and Stanstead, Quebec.

Opened in 1904 to promote friendship between nations, it’s one of the only places in the world where visitors can cross an international line while browsing books or watching a play.

U.S. officials plan to close the main entrance to Canadians, citing concerns about criminal exploitation of the border.

Starting in October, Canadians will need to use an official border crossing just to access the library, a decision that has sparked public outcry and criticism from figures like bestselling author Louise Penny, who pledged C$50,000 to fund a new entrance from the Canadian side.
