The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has finally opened its doors, marking one of the most ambitious cultural projects in modern history.

Located beside the Great Pyramids of Giza, the $1 billion complex spans more than 24,000 square meters and houses over 50,000 artifacts tracing the story of ancient Egypt from prehistory to the Roman era.

Among its highlights are the 3,200-year-old statue of Ramesses the Great and the full collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures — displayed together for the first time since their discovery in 1922.

Designed by Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects, the museum features a grand glass façade that mirrors the pyramids and connects directly to the Giza Plateau via eco-friendly transport routes.

Egyptian officials hope the landmark project will draw up to 20,000 visitors a day and help revive tourism, a critical source of foreign currency for Egypt’s struggling economy.
