Teens Allegedly Executed in North Korea Over “Squid Game”
A shocking new report from Amnesty International reveals that North Korean authorities have executed teenagers for consuming South Korean media, including watching the popular Netflix series “Squid Game” and listening to K-pop music.
The human rights organization collected testimony from escapees, including one with family ties in Yanggang Province, who detailed how people, including schoolchildren, faced the death penalty for these “crimes,” while others received multi-year sentences in forced labor camps.
The punishment system is described as deeply corrupt, with outcomes heavily dependent on wealth and connections—affluent families can bribe officials for mere warnings, while those without resources face severe penalties.
Former students also reported being forced as teenagers to witness public executions as a form of state-mandated indoctrination, designed to terrify the population and deter exposure to any foreign culture or information, illustrating what Amnesty calls an “ideological cage” that suffocates basic human curiosity and entertainment.
