Syria’s Kurds Face Attacks as IS-Linked Site Left Unguarded

A landmark ceasefire agreement in Syria, signed just one day prior, has completely collapsed as armed factions linked to the Damascus government launched a major assault targeting two prisons holding thousands of Islamic State (ISIS) fighters.
The US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which had managed the al-Shaddadi and al-Aqtan prisons, reported intense clashes and stated it lost control of the al-Shaddadi facility, warning of an “extremely dangerous” security situation that could lead to a catastrophic jailbreak.
This escalation directly undermines the 14-point peace deal, which specifically included provisions for Damascus to take responsibility for ISIS detainees, and has been condemned by the SDF, who accused the attacking factions of carrying out “ISIS-style” atrocities, including beheadings.
In response, the SDF has issued a call for Kurds across the region and in the diaspora to “unite” and “join the resistance.”
