Syria Prison Holding ISIS Fighters Out of Control
Kurdish-led forces in northeast Syria said they have lost control of the sprawling al-Shaddadi prison, a key detention facility housing tens of thousands of veteran Islamic State (ISIS) militants, following repeated attacks by factions affiliated with the Damascus government.
The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which had managed the prison, stated it suffered dozens of casualties trying to prevent what it calls a looming “security catastrophe.”
This dangerous breach comes just one day after the SDF and the Syrian government signed a 14-point Ceasefire and Full Integration Agreement, which included an immediate ceasefire and a plan for Damascus to take control of ISIS prisoners in SDF facilities.
Kurdish authorities have long warned that these overcrowded prisons are a “ticking time bomb,” and the loss of control raises grave concerns that hardened ISIS fighters could escape or regroup, destabilizing the region and undermining the years-long fight against the terrorist organization.
