Stunning ‘Blood Moon’ Lights Up the Skies Across the Americas

A rare total lunar eclipse turned the full moon a deep red early Friday, dazzling skywatchers across North and South America.

The celestial event, often called a “blood moon,” occurred as the moon moved into Earth’s shadow, blocking direct sunlight and casting a reddish hue due to atmospheric light scattering.

According to NASA, the eclipse’s totality lasted 66 minutes, with partial phases before and after the main event.

The phenomenon was visible across most of the Americas, with glimpses also seen in parts of Africa, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
