Spain Against Fire

Spain is facing one of its worst wildfire seasons in decades, with record international aid pouring in as flames sweep across vast stretches of land.

Authorities report that 23 wildfires are burning simultaneously in the regions of Galicia and Castile and Leon, fueled by a brutal 16-day heatwave that ranks as the third longest ever recorded in Spain.

The fires have destroyed more than 115,000 hectares (285,000 acres) of forest and farmland, leaving behind a trail of devastation. In response, Spain has activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, receiving airplanes, firefighting teams, and emergency equipment from across Europe, the largest international aid effort the country has ever seen.

The Spanish army has also deployed 1,900 troops to support local firefighters as blazes spread to the southern slopes of the Picos de Europa mountain range, forcing the closure of part of the iconic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.

Authorities say 27 people have been arrested and 92 are under investigation for suspected arson since June. With southern Europe enduring one of its worst fire seasons in 20 years, the crisis highlights how extreme heat and climate conditions are intensifying the wildfire threat across the region.
