Sen. Lummis: Americans Back Iranian Citizens, Oppose U.S. Ground Troops

U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis says the American public broadly supports Iranian citizens seeking to restore their country, but draws a clear line against deploying U.S. troops on the ground in Iran.

Speaking about public sentiment, Lummis said Americans are “cheering for the ordinary citizen of Iran,” while strongly opposing direct military involvement that would put U.S. forces at risk.

She noted that President Donald Trump has a range of tools available beyond ground troops, including economic pressure, sanctions, energy leverage, and military options short of deployment — such as the potential use of U.S. forces to block the Strait of Hormuz.

Lummis emphasized that as long as U.S. troops remain out of harm’s way, Americans support efforts that allow Iranians to reclaim what she described as their country’s former glory.
