Scientists and Celebrities Unite to Ban Uncontrollable AI
Over 700 scientists, politicians, and public figures — including Prince Harry, Richard Branson, Steve Bannon, and the “Godfather of AI” Geoffrey Hinton — have signed an open letter calling for a global ban on the development of artificial intelligence that could surpass human intelligence.
The letter, published by the US-based Future of Life Institute, urges a halt on “superintelligence” projects until the technology is proven safe, controllable, and supported by public consensus.
Other major signatories include AI experts Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russell, and Vatican advisor Paolo Benanti, as well as celebrities like Meghan Markle and will.i.am.
The initiative warns that corporations are racing toward “smarter-than-human AI” without sufficient oversight or understanding of its long-term risks.
Future of Life Institute president Max Tegmark emphasized that AI companies should not pursue such goals without a global regulatory framework.
This call echoes previous appeals made during the UN General Assembly for governments to set international “red lines” for AI by 2026, underscoring mounting fears over the ethical, societal, and existential risks of unrestrained artificial intelligence development.
