Russia Becomes First Country to Recognize Afghanistan’s Taliban Government

Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government, becoming the first country to do so since the group’s 2021 return to power.

The announcement came after a meeting between Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Russia’s ambassador in Kabul, marking what Taliban officials described as a “brave decision” and a new era of bilateral cooperation.

Russia signaled interest in trade, energy, and infrastructure partnerships, while critics—including Afghan women leaders—condemned the move for legitimizing a regime that severely restricts women’s rights and harbors UN-sanctioned individuals.
