Rubio Reinstates Times New Roman, Ending Biden’s Calibri Era

The U.S. State Department is officially returning to Times New Roman, reversing the Biden-era decision to adopt Calibri, a shift Secretary of State Marco Rubio called a “wasteful” diversity measure.

This change places Times New Roman at the center of a broader push by the Trump administration to standardize federal communication and eliminate policies seen as tied to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

According to the department, restoring Times New Roman reflects a desire for a unified and professional tone across all diplomatic communications, contrasting with the Biden administration’s preference for Calibri, which was promoted as more accessible for visually impaired readers.

The designer of Calibri said the reversal was “sad and hilarious,” emphasizing that Calibri was chosen to modernize digital reading, while Times New Roman is a traditional serif font long used in courts and government agencies.

As the administration moves forward, Times New Roman will now appear in every official cable, memo, and diplomatic document starting December 10, marking a definitive end to the Biden-era Calibri standard.
