Robert De Niro Honored in Rome with Prestigious Capitoline Wolf Award
Robert De Niro, the legendary Oscar-winning actor whose career spans over five decades, was honored in Rome with the Capitoline Wolf, the city’s most prestigious civic award.
At 81, De Niro’s recognition goes far beyond his cinematic achievements — it’s a tribute to his deep Italian roots and cultural influence.
Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, praised the actor for his lifelong contribution to film and for representing Italian-American identity with authenticity and pride.
Born in New York to parents of Italian descent, De Niro’s ancestral ties reach back to Ferrazzano, a small town in southern Italy, where his great-grandparents emigrated from in 1887.
Over the years, De Niro has maintained a close connection to his heritage, earning honorary citizenship in Ferrazzano in 2004 and later obtaining Italian citizenship in 2006.
His portrayal of Italian-American characters in classics like The Godfather: Part II and Goodfellas not only cemented his reputation as one of the greatest actors of his generation but also helped shape the global image of Italian identity in Hollywood.
This latest honor in Rome serves as both a symbolic homecoming and a celebration of an artist who has bridged two cultures through the power of storytelling and performance.
