Pets and the Holiday Season

Christmas has just wrapped up across the United States, and for millions of Americans, pets were a big part of the holiday celebrations. Veterinarians say the days immediately after Christmas are among the busiest of the year, treating dogs and cats that ingested rich holiday foods, chocolate, bones, and decorations left within reach during family gatherings.

Animal welfare groups also report a post-holiday increase in lost pets, often linked to open doors during parties, travel, and busy celebrations. At the same time, shelters say holiday adoptions surged, with many families welcoming new dogs and cats into their homes through seasonal promotions and year-end giving.

Experts are now urging pet owners to help animals ease back into routine, safely dispose of decorations, and schedule follow-up veterinary visits if needed, ensuring the holiday season ends safely for every member of the family, including the four-legged ones.
