NYC Crushes 200 Illegal Bikes in Crime Crackdown
New York City has reached a major milestone in its crackdown on unregistered and illegal vehicles, officially seizing and destroying over 100,000 since 2022.
Marking the occasion, Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch oversaw the demolition of more than 200 illegal two-wheelers, including mopeds, dirt bikes, and ATVs, at Freshkills Park in Staten Island.
The initiative, led by the NYPD and the Department of Sanitation, aims to curb crime and restore order on city streets by targeting “ghost vehicles” often linked to theft, hit-and-runs, and other public safety threats.
According to city officials, the effort has already paid off: grand larceny involving mopeds has dropped by 85.7%, and robbery patterns are down by 68.2% compared to the previous year. Officials emphasized that the destroyed vehicles were mostly untraceable and often used in criminal activity, making their removal a key part of citywide enforcement.
