Norway Introduces 3% Tourist Tax to Combat Overtourism

Norwegian lawmakers have passed a 3% tourist tax on lodging, potentially extending to cruise ships, to address overtourism driven by a record 38.4 million overnight stays last year, including over 12 million by international visitors.

The surge in tourism has strained public toilets, parking facilities, and other infrastructure in scenic fjord regions, causing local tensions.

Revenue from the tax will be dedicated exclusively to upgrading tourism infrastructure and promoting sustainable visitor management, aiming to balance economic benefits with community well-being and environmental preservation.
