Nepal’s Parliament Set on Fire as PM Resigns Amid Deadly Protests

Nepal has been thrown into turmoil after deadly youth-led protests escalated into one of the country’s worst political crises in years, leaving at least 19 people dead and over 100 injured.

What began as outrage over a controversial social media ban quickly grew into nationwide demonstrations against corruption, inequality, and the government’s failure to deliver opportunities for its young population, which makes up nearly half of the country.

Protesters stormed Kathmandu’s parliament, torched the main building, and even attacked Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s residence, forcing the veteran leader to resign after six decades in politics and four separate terms as head of government.

Despite the government reversing the ban, anger persisted, fueled by economic stagnation, unemployment, and mistrust of the ruling elite.

The resignation of Oli, along with other ministers, signals both the depth of the crisis and the generational divide driving the unrest, with Nepal’s so-called “Gen Z protests” marking a pivotal moment in the country’s fragile democracy.
