NBA Record Deal: Lakers to Be Sold for $10 Billion
In a move that would reshape the landscape of American sports ownership, ESPN reports that the Buss family is set to sell its controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal valuing the NBA franchise at $10 billion.
The buyer, Mark Walter, is a prominent figure in Los Angeles sports, already holding stakes in the MLB’s Dodgers and the WNBA’s Sparks through his company TWG Global.
The deal, if confirmed, would be the largest professional sports team sale on record. Jerry Buss, who bought the team in 1979, turned the Lakers into one of the most iconic brands in global sports, securing ten NBA championships under his ownership.
Since his death in 2013, his daughter Jeanie Buss has served as the team’s governor and is expected to retain that role following the sale.
The Lakers brand, synonymous with legends like Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James, enters a new era as one of the league’s most influential families transitions out of majority control.
