Miami Elects First Democratic Mayor in 30 Years
Miami voters made history by electing Eileen Higgins as the city’s next mayor, ending nearly three decades of Republican control and marking a major political shift in one of Florida’s most prominent urban centers.
Higgins secured roughly 60 percent of the vote in a low-turnout runoff election, defeating Republican Emilio T. Gonzalez, who was backed by President Donald Trump.
Her victory is especially significant in a city where Cuban-American Republicans have dominated local politics for generations.
Higgins celebrated the win as the start of a new chapter focused on ethical leadership and accountability.
At 61, she also becomes the first woman ever elected mayor of Miami. Her win follows a series of Democratic gains across the country, including wins in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York.
