Look Inside Alcatraz: The Infamous Prison Trump Wants to Reopen
U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed reopening Alcatraz, the infamous maximum-security prison that once housed criminals like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had directed officials to “rebuild and reopen” the facility, calling it a symbol of “Law, Order, and JUSTICE.”
Alcatraz Island, located 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco, operated as a federal prison from 1934 until 1963. Its remote location, cold waters, and strong currents made escape nearly impossible.
Despite this, the prison became legendary for a 1962 escape attempt in which three inmates vanished and were never found.
