Jimmy Kimmel gets Italian passport over Trump’s second term
Jimmy Kimmel has confirmed he now holds Italian citizenship, a decision he says was prompted by Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024.
Speaking on The Sarah Silverman Podcast, the late-night host said the political climate under Trump’s second term is “so much worse” than expected, calling it “unbelievable.” Kimmel, eligible through his grandmother Edith, traced his roots to Avellino and Ischia, where his grandfather’s family emigrated to the U.S. after an 1883 earthquake.
Kimmel is part of a growing list of American celebrities seeking residency or citizenship abroad following Trump’s return to office. Rosie O’Donnell moved to Ireland earlier this year, while Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi relocated to the UK, citing a better quality of life.
A frequent critic of Trump, Kimmel has also been targeted by the president, who recently celebrated Stephen Colbert’s firing and suggested Kimmel could be “next.”
Despite political differences, Kimmel urged compassion toward former Trump supporters who now oppose him, saying “the door has to stay open” for those willing to change their minds.
