Japan’s PM Turns Local Handbag Into Global Hit

Japan’s first female Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has set off an unexpected fashion wave after images of her carrying a “Grace Delight Tote” by the 145-year-old leather goods maker Hamano Inc. went viral online.

The bag, priced at about $895, is celebrated for its craftsmanship, light weight, and understated design — blending elegance with functionality. Following widespread media coverage and social media buzz, Hamano reported a surge in orders, forcing the company to delay shipments until April 2026.

Hamano, a family-run business based in Nagano Prefecture, has long been known for supplying handbags to members of Japan’s imperial family. Analysts say this new visibility is a rare moment for Japan’s domestic luxury sector, which often competes with major Western brands.

Takaichi’s fashion choices also draw attention to Japanese designers such as Jun Ashida, known for dressing high-profile figures including the royal family.
