Iraq Unearths Mass Grave of IS Victims Near Mosul
Iraqi authorities have begun excavating the Khasfa mass grave near Mosul, believed to contain thousands of victims killed by the terrorist “Islamic State” (IS) group between 2014 and 2017. The site, a massive sinkhole, poses major recovery challenges due to underground water erosion that may have damaged human remains. Victims include Yazidis, Iraqi soldiers, and Mosul residents, with estimates suggesting at least 4,000 bodies—and possibly many more—are buried there. The excavation highlights one of the worst massacres committed by IS and reflects Iraq’s broader effort to uncover more than 200 mass graves left behind across the country.
