Inside “Don Colossus,” the Trump Statue Planned for the G20

When world leaders arrive in the United States for the next Group of 20 summit, the setting will include an unusual and striking feature: a towering golden statue of the summit’s host, President Donald Trump. The 22-foot monument, known as “Don Colossus,” is a bronze likeness covered in gold leaf and placed at the Trump-owned resort in Miami that will host the G20 meeting.

The statue was commissioned by a group of cryptocurrency investors seeking to promote a memecoin called $PATRIOT. According to reporting, the investors hired Ohio-based sculptor Alan Cottrill, whose previous work includes statues of former U.S. presidents and pieces held in the U.S. Capitol’s art collection.

Cottrill has said the commissioners requested changes to make the nearly 80-year-old president appear slimmer and more idealized.

Despite being completed, the statue is currently being held at the sculptor’s foundry due to a payment dispute, with Cottrill claiming he is owed tens of thousands of dollars.

One of the project’s backers has said the artist will be paid in full before the statue is revealed.

The White House has stated it is not involved in the crypto project or the statue itself, though the Trump administration is overseeing planning for the G20 summit.
