Gangnam Style Star PSY Faces Police Probe Over Prescriptions
South Korean superstar PSY, whose hit Gangnam Style became a global phenomenon, is now at the center of a police investigation in Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, authorities are probing whether PSY illegally violated medical laws by having prescription medications collected on his behalf by third parties instead of visiting hospitals in person.
The case reportedly began after a tip-off, leading police to raid a university hospital in search of related records. PSY’s agency, P Nation, admitted that while no proxy prescriptions were issued, third parties did at times collect prescribed sleeping pills on the singer’s behalf.
The company said PSY has been diagnosed with a chronic sleep disorder and takes the medication under medical supervision, but acknowledged it was “a mistake and oversight” and issued a formal apology to fans for causing concern.
Police have also filed charges against a university hospital doctor in connection with the matter. The investigation raises questions about whether the incident could impact PSY’s long-standing reputation in South Korea and abroad, or if it will pass as a minor controversy in the career of one of K-pop’s most recognizable global icons.
