From CNN to NYT: Trump’s History of Media Lawsuits
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against The New York Times, marking one of the largest claims ever brought against an American newspaper.
Trump accused the paper of publishing “false, malicious, and defamatory” statements targeting him, his family, and the America First movement. The lawsuit follows years of clashes between Trump and mainstream media outlets, with the president frequently describing the press as biased against him.
In July, Trump also filed a $10 billion suit against The Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch over reporting tied to Jeffrey Epstein, while earlier lawsuits against ABC and CBS led to multimillion-dollar settlements.
Trump’s legal strategy underscores his long-standing effort to portray major outlets as partisan actors, singling out the Times’ endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race as further evidence of bias.
According to the filing, the reputational damage Trump alleges could amount to billions in losses.
