Fired USAID Health Workers Honored with Emotional ‘Clap Out’
Dozens of USAID Global Health Bureau employees received hugs and applause as they left their offices for the last time, following mass layoffs ordered by the Trump administration. The “clap out” ceremony honored their service amid sweeping job cuts and a freeze on U.S. foreign aid.
Former USAID Global Health Bureau Director Dr. Atul Gawande was present, personally greeting and supporting the dismissed staff. The layoffs are part of broader cuts, with 1,600 USAID employees placed on leave or terminated.
Trump’s decision to freeze foreign aid has left hundreds of millions of dollars in life-saving medical supplies stranded in warehouses and on ships worldwide. Essential HIV and tuberculosis drugs, medical oxygen, and other critical supplies remain stuck in disrupted supply chains, putting patients at risk.
