Erbil Plans to Plant Millions of Trees in Massive Green Belt Project
Erbil authorities have announced an ambitious plan to create a circular green belt around the city by planting millions of pistachio and olive trees, aiming to tackle worsening air pollution and the impacts of climate change.
The green belt will be established around Erbil’s 150-meter ring road and supported by over 10 artificial lakes for irrigation.
This large-scale afforestation project also targets the reduction of dust storms, which have recently hospitalized dozens.
Officials say the initiative is part of a long-term strategy to increase urban greenery and resilience as Iraq faces growing environmental challenges.
