Found After 40 Years: Darth Vader’s Lightsaber Heads to Auction
The iconic lightsaber wielded by Darth Vader in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is heading to auction, and it could fetch up to $3 million.
Displayed in London before its sale in Los Angeles next month, the screen-used prop is being dubbed the “Holy Grail” of Star Wars memorabilia. Used in scenes where Vader duels Luke Skywalker, including the moment he infamously cuts off Luke’s hand, the weapon is rich with cinematic history.
It was used by actor David Prowse and stuntman Bob Anderson, and verified through screen-accurate dents and wear. The item lacks its original blade, but the hilt’s authenticity is confirmed, having been in private hands for 40 years.
Made from a modified camera-flash handle and calculator parts, the piece reflects Star Wars’ DIY production legacy. Propstore, the auction house behind the sale, says the item was discovered by someone who simply Googled “sell Star Wars prop.”
Other blockbuster memorabilia like Indiana Jones’ whip and a Men in Black neuralyzer will also be up for bid. For collectors and fans, it’s not just a prop, it’s a piece of modern myth.
