Can a Chat with AI Change Your Vote?

New research from experiments using AI models such as GPT-4o and DeepSeek shows that partisan chatbots can meaningfully shift political opinions among voters across the United States, Canada, Poland, and the United Kingdom.

In the U.S. tests ahead of the 2024 election, some Trump supporters shifted slightly toward Kamala Harris, while opposition supporters in Canada and Poland saw attitude shifts of up to 10 points after short chatbot conversations.

Although voting intentions do not always translate into real votes, follow-up surveys revealed that up to half of the persuasive effect persisted for a month in some countries.

The studies found that chatbots were most convincing when they offered polite, evidence-backed explanations—even when some of the “evidence” was inaccurate.

These findings raise concerns about how more advanced future AI systems might influence public opinion and democratic outcomes.
