Blumenthal Says Venezuela Boat Strikes Violated Laws of War
Senator Richard Blumenthal is sharply criticizing the administration’s actions against Venezuela, saying recent strikes on boats in the Caribbean amounted to unlawful killings and potential war crimes. He argues the operation was “illegal,” adding that the American public has already seen enough evidence to conclude that murders may have occurred.
Blumenthal says the video footage — which appears to show unarmed individuals being struck again while clinging to a disabled boat — indicates violations of the laws of war. He notes that the administration has not denied that two people who were already out of the fight and had claimed the vessel were killed.
He warns that officials are attempting to shift blame and suggests that Heghset’s effort to make Admiral Bradlee the scapegoat is grounds for resignation or removal. Blumenthal insists accountability is essential and says the evidence points to clear criminal culpability.
