From Barbie to Bots: Mattel Partners With OpenAI on AI-Powered Toy Design

OpenAI is expanding its reach beyond tech — and into toys. During its 2025 Developer Day in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman announced a new partnership with Mattel, allowing the toy giant to use Sora 2, OpenAI’s powerful AI video generation model, to bring toy concepts to life.

With Sora 2, Mattel designers can turn a rough sketch into a fully realized 3D video prototype within seconds, accelerating creativity and product design.

The announcement came alongside the launch of GPT-5 Pro, a more advanced model for industries that demand precision and reasoning — from finance and law to health care.

OpenAI also revealed a new real-time voice model, which delivers expressive, low-latency AI speech at 70% lower cost than before.

Altman called voice interaction “the next frontier” for everyday AI use. The updates mark a major leap in OpenAI’s developer ecosystem, bridging creativity, technology, and industry.
