Australia Forces Social Media Platforms to Block All Under-16 Users
Australia is enforcing a world-first law that bans anyone under 16 from joining major social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, beginning December 10.
TikTok confirmed it will fully comply, warning users the changes “may be upsetting” as teens with existing accounts will be locked out and their content hidden from public view.
Young users can appeal by submitting proof of age through official ID, facial images, or payment verification, while those affected may download or delete their data or request a reminder when they turn 16.
Australian officials argue the measure is necessary to protect teens from harmful algorithmic content linked to mental health risks, including cases where vulnerable youth were pushed toward self-harm.
Digital rights groups are challenging the law as an unfair restriction on free expression, but other countries—such as Malaysia and New Zealand—are already exploring similar age-based bans as global concern grows about social media’s impact on young people.
