Americans Ring in the New Year as 2026 Begins

Across the United States, Americans are welcoming the New Year with public countdowns, fireworks, and gatherings with family and friends. The largest celebration takes place in New York City’s Times Square, where more than a million people are expected for the iconic ball drop, while similar events unfold in cities including Las Vegas, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Many Americans are also marking the moment at home, watching televised countdowns, making New Year’s resolutions, and sharing a midnight toast. Traditional foods believed to bring good luck, such as black-eyed peas and lentils, remain popular in parts of the country. As 2025 comes to a close and 2026 begins, cities are preparing for heavy travel, large crowds, and heightened security, with travel hubs among the busiest of the year. As the clock strikes midnight, Americans pause to say goodbye to 2025 and welcome 2026 with hope, celebration, and reflection. Migi Fabara reports.
