Albania Just Hired an AI Minister — Meet “Diella”

Albania has taken an unprecedented step in global politics by appointing an AI-generated minister to its government, marking the first time artificial intelligence has held such a position.

Prime Minister Edi Rama introduced the virtual minister, named Diella, which means “sun” in Albanian, as part of his new cabinet following a major election victory.

Diella will be responsible for overseeing all public tenders, a process often plagued by corruption, with Rama promising that her decisions will be “100-percent corruption-free.”

The AI official, launched earlier this year, has already assisted thousands of Albanians through the country’s e-Albania digital platform, issuing more than 36,600 digital documents and facilitating nearly 1,000 public services.

Designed as a woman dressed in traditional Albanian attire, Diella’s role is both symbolic and functional, showcasing the country’s commitment to innovation while addressing deep-rooted governance challenges.

This bold move also aligns with Albania’s long-term goal of joining the European Union by 2030, where anti-corruption reforms remain a key requirement.
