Who Could Replace Iran at the 2026 World Cup?

Iran’s possible withdrawal from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has created uncertainty over the tournament’s final lineup and raised questions about which country could replace the team.

Iran had already qualified for the competition and was drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand, with all three of its group matches scheduled to take place in the United States.

However, Iran’s sports minister said the country would not participate following the recent war with the United States and Israel.

If the withdrawal is confirmed, FIFA will have to determine a replacement team to maintain the structure of the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

According to reports discussing FIFA’s tournament regulations, the governing body has the authority to decide how to replace a qualified team that withdraws.

One scenario being discussed involves Iraq, which is considered the most likely candidate because it is among the highest-ranked Asian teams that has not yet secured a World Cup spot.

If Iraq were promoted into the final tournament, it could trigger further changes in the qualification process. Reports suggest the United Arab Emirates could move into the Intercontinental Playoffs, filling the slot Iraq would leave behind.

FIFA has not yet announced a final decision.
