What We Know About the Gaza Ceasefire Deal
Israel and Hamas have agreed to a historic ceasefire after indirect negotiations in Egypt, designed to free hostages held in Gaza and release nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
According to a Hamas official, 47 hostages remain, including 25 reportedly dead from the October 7, 2023 attack. Israel will release 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 others detained since the war began, while high-profile Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti will not be part of the exchange.
The deal ensures humanitarian aid, including a minimum of 400 trucks entering Gaza daily for the first five days, with additional aid in following days.
Israeli troops will redeploy to a “yellow line” within 24 hours, and displaced residents will return to northern and central Gaza.
The ceasefire is grounded in President Trump’s 20-point peace plan, though Hamas rejects the proposed transitional authority.
Negotiations for phase two, covering disarmament and further Israeli withdrawals, are set to begin immediately in Sharm El-Sheikh.
