UK Probes X’s Grok Over Sexualised AI Images
UK media regulator Ofcom has launched a formal investigation into Elon Musk’s X platform over serious safety failures linked to its AI chatbot, Grok.
The probe focuses on Grok’s image-creation feature, which users have exploited to generate non-consensual, sexualized deepfakes of women and children.
Ofcom stated these AI-generated images may constitute illegal intimate image abuse or child sexual abuse material, violating Britain’s new Online Safety Act.
The investigation will determine if X failed its legal duties to protect users, with potential fines reaching 10% of the company’s global revenue.
In response to growing international backlash, X restricted Grok to paying subscribers—a move criticized by UK leaders as insufficient—while countries like Indonesia and Malaysia have banned the tool outright, and the European Commission reviews similar complaints.
