U.S. Freezes All Afghan Applications After D.C. Shooting

The United States has suspended all immigration applications from Afghan nationals indefinitely, citing the need for a full review of vetting procedures after a shooting near the White House left two National Guard soldiers critically wounded.

Authorities say the suspected gunman, identified by U.S. media as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was an Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021 and had previously served alongside American forces.

Officials described the attack as an ambush, calling it an “act of terror,” prompting immediate political response and a nationwide reassessment of Afghan admissions under Operation Allies Welcome.

As law enforcement continues its investigation, the decision marks one of the most sweeping immigration freezes enacted in recent years, escalating the national debate over security, vetting, and the future of Afghan resettlement in the U.S.
